Heartland Summer Swim League...
Frequently Asked Summer League Questions...
1. What is the “Swim Test”?
The test is to determine the ability and water safety level of the swimmer. We coach only from the deck and the swimmers need to possess basic swimming skills. The test consists of one length of the pool (25 yards) freestyle and we need the swimmer to have some knowledge of side breathing. This lap does not have to be perfect but stable, steady and fearless. Then the swimmer is asked to swim 25 yards on their back. Again, just steady and safe are the real issues.
2. What if my swimmer does not pass the test?
The coaches that do not allow the swimmer in the program have very good instincts. It may be that your swimmer is not confident, needs a refresher, or just doesn’t want to do the program. We will suggest our pre-season program, if available, and that usually helps those swimmers on the fence with their skills. Summer League is a NON-COMPETITIVE entry-level program and we try to take everyone that will have a positive experience. We do swim lap after lap in practice and some younger children are just not ready for this group approach. We do understand that some swimmers may be entering the pool for the first time since last summer and may be hesitant or weak in their skills, these swimmers are excellent candidates for the pre-season program.
3. Should I register even if I am not sure my swimmer will pass the test?
Some programs fill up very fast and pre-registering with payment will hold your spot. If your swimmer does not pass the test we will refund your money in full.
4. What if we go on vacation during the program?
The program is designed for flexibility. Obviously the more you practice the better you will get, but all practices are not mandatory. If you are going to miss a meet or practice just let the head coach know in writing so they won’t schedule the swimmer for events inappropriately. There will not be a refund for the missed time.
5. My swimmers is 5 and has very strong swim skills, can they join?
We try to limit the minimum age to 6 but sometimes the swimmer is very capable. The only issue is the swimmer being able to follow directions in a large group and compete at the meets with older swimmers. It really depends on the child and how they are dealing with the situation. Often times we hold the swimmer out of the program to make sure they are really ready and it tends to make for a more positive experience later.
6. Why is there a refund period?
Heartland Swim is a true non-profit. We put all of our efforts into the programs. We base our staff and supplies on the registered applicants at the beginning of the program. We are only able to hold the refund period open for a short time frame. Please refer to the flyer for the dates and refund period for this year.
